Location History:
The lighthouse pub is situated in the village of Marcross, many years ago it was known as the Horseshoe inn.
In 1851 it was both a Public House and a Blacksmith and was owned at the time by the Jenkins family.
The name Marcross is said to be a corruption of 'Mor Croes' meaning 'The Cross on the Sea Shore'.
There are some barely visable remains of a long cairn, which is now covered in grass and gorse. It was described in 1811 as an ancient Cromlech and was according to tradition a place of worship for the old village. The area was also thought to be devoted to the Druids for religious purposes. Hence the name Marcross. (Mor Croes)
The area is known locally as 'Hen Eglwys' meaning old church. The whole area has a rich and colourful history and was extensively used by smugglers. There is a Iron Age Promontary Fort nearby at Nash Point and is one of several along the heritage coast. These were built between around 700 BC and the Roman Invasion. Most of the Fort has now been destroyed by cliff erosion.
In 1832, 40 lives were lost when the passenger steamer 'Frolic' ran aground on Nash Point sand bank.

Tom Clemetts History of Barry
Reported experiences:
On October 13th 2003, the new owner of the Lighthouse, her son and his partner were sat near the bar enjoying a quiet drink. The owner saw something move behind the bar out of the corner of her eye and turned to look, as did the others. All three of them stared in disbelief as a 'Fisherman' in old fashioned dress stood behind the bar appearing to look straight at them. The owner recalls the Fisherman holding two white flags or handkerchiefs and moving his arms back and forth, moving one over the other as if signalling.
The owner and her partner, who live in the flat above, were woken one night by bangs and movement from downstairs in the pub. Thinking they had an intruder, they both came down to the lounge to investigate. They walked out into the middle of the room and could see no-one, all was quiet. Suddenly behind them by the door they had just came through, a large Yukka plant began to shake vigorously. As soon as they turned around the shaking stopped immediately.
The owners son came out from the cellar one afternoon and pushed the bolt back across the door behind him. It was a rusty old bolt and very stiff. As he walked back across the bar, he heard a bang and a clatter behind him. He ran back, to see not only had the bolt been opened again but it had also been completely pushed out of it's housing and was on the floor.
Since sharing these experiences with the locals who frequent the pub and also the staff who work there. Many of these have come forward with experiences of their own and tales of an eventful past.
Investigation Preparation:
The group took some time to set up their equipment. The little Infra Red camera was set up on the bar counter, overlooking the area where the fisherman had been seen prior to this investigation.
A trigger object was set in the cellar, with a locked off camcorder trained onto it. Also in the cellar a CCTV camera was surveying the general area and an Infra Red lamp was also used to ensure the finished footage was clear.
We made a plan of the area, breaking the pub into sections so we could investigate the area adequately.
PLAN OF AREA

A camcorder was set on a tripod at the bottom end of section B, to the side of the bay window, facing up towards the toilets. The temperature was recorded at 21*C throughout both sections A & B, with the exception of the bar area, which was recorded at 22*C. This was to be expected considering the amount of equipment situated there.
Even though the owner of the premises switched off as much as possible, we took into account the equipment that had to remain on and the noises made by them.
The temperature throughout the cellar, varied from 8*C - 15*C this again would have been caused by the coolers and equipment.
There where no EMF readings* throughout sections A & B, including the toilets which had been checked as a matter of course. The cellar also showed no EMF readings.
There were no Negative Ion Detector readings in section B.
There was a Canum reading high up around the bar where overhead lights were stationed. The reading was considered and it was allowed it may have been caused by the lighting itself, or even by equipment situated in the flat just above.
The same applied to section A, nothing was picked up by the Detector, apart from a slight reading off the monitor for the camera, which had been set in that area, *the EMF meter also picked up on this. This would be expected from such an electrical device.
Trudy was standing by the barrels in the cellar setting the trigger object on one of them, while Austin tested the surrounding area using the Negative Ion Detector.
A large (2 pulse) reading was picked up.
Austin moved the Detector around again but it remained quiet, whatever had caused the reading was no longer there.
We instantly checked out all the possibilities we could think of for this reading to have occured. We tested the feasibility of it having been caused by movement of the group members, static from clothing etc.. We spent some time testing and discounting possibilities.
The reading could not be reproduced and no cause for it could be found. It was definately not down to any cellar equipment, if this had been the case the Negative Ion Detector would have continued to pick up the reading.
Numerous photographs were taken by two digital camera's around all sections, including the toilets.
In section A, a large mirror was noted on the left hand wall. This had to be taken into consideration for shadows and flash/light reflections.
Austin took quite a few photographs of the mirror from different angles, to test the effects of flash reflections and light. Also to assess the effects on the finished photograph, of a few smears left on the mirror by recent cleaning.
Investigation:
1am Section B:
Start Temperature 21*C
All seemed pretty quiet, the pub was now empty and in darkness. In spite of it being very busy earlier on in the evening, no-one in the group felt uneasy or uncomfortable.
The pub felt pleasant and un-threatening. Part of the reason for this was probably the large windows around the entire pub and the street light shinning through.
The light from outside although very dim allowed the group to see much more of the room.
It was expected this would make the group members more uneasy because they could now see far more of their surroundings than had ever been possible for them on previous investigations.
There was nothing at all to report in this area at this time, there seemed to be some shadows/movement on camera but we cannot rule out the group moving around and causing this.
1.45am Section A :
The group sit quietly in this area for quite a while. Kevin then asked the standard questions to try and communicate with anything that may have been around. He had no response from these questions but a little while later, Kevin caught a light flicker out of the corner of his eye and Austin said he saw a definate flash of light.
Looking at the footage of this later, at the same time Kevin and Austin saw the flash, there are two orbs and a definate spark of light picked up on camcorder, at one point the picture also distorts and this has never been known to happen before with this particular camcorder.
Apart from this flash of light and the orbs, there appeared to be nothing else of interest picked up in this area. However on viewing photographs later, there is one taken of the bar area in section A and above a blackboard placed across the top of the bar is a strange shape/shadow.
2.30am: The group stops for a short break.
2.50amSection B :
The temperature was noted to remain a constant 21*C, interestingly by the plant where activity had been witnessed prior to this investigation, it was constantly showing almost 2*C less, this was a pattern throughout the evening.
3.10am: After discussions the group decided to move things around and check on the trigger object and camera's in the cellar.
The trigger object remained untouched, so the camera trained on this was then moved from there into the back part of the cellar. The little Infra Red camera we moved from the bar and reset it in section B pointing towards the gents toilets. Austin camcorder was then re-positioned to overlook the bar area.
Kevin still preferring to have his camcorder to hand throughout the investigation.
3.25am Section B :
We sat in this area for some time and it seemed quiet enough, the group were a little disheartened by the lack of events.
After a while Trudy left the others and went to sit alone in section A, she was able to watch section B on the monitor. After she had been sitting there a while she noticed a shadow which looked like the shape of a person on the gents toilet door. She called through to tell the others about this and Kevin took a few photographs.
There seemed to be nothing around of that size and shape that could cast a shadow. If it had been something around in the pub it would be feasible to assume the shadow would have been there from the start, the camera had remained in the same position and the shadow had definately not been there before. Kevin and Austin where both sitting down behind the camera.
The shape remained on the door for quite a while.
Trudy had already turned around in her seat and had been looking behind her in the bar area, when Austin shouted to ask if she had just moved, because he had just seen a shadow move behind the bar. Trudy who hadn't moved at all until Austin shouted immediately left her seat
and went to join the others in section B. After spending an uneventful 10 minutes with Kevin and Austin, Trudy went back into section A. Looking at the monitor again she realised the shape on the door had gone.
It wasn't until viewing footage later, as Austin say's he saw a shadow behind the bar. Two orbs come down from the bar, moving around each other, they go down to the floor and then up and across to the plant and the toilet area.
Another strange orb was also picked up at this time by another camcorder.
One of the orbs in particular is very strange, it seems to have it's own inner energy, like a mini 'plasma ball' and you can actually see this orb spinning as it moves around the other one.
The other interesting thing found on the footage relating to this area, is an orb that comes quickly straight up from the floor along-a-side Austin and slows almost to a stop, level with his face before continuing on it's journey straight upwards.
There were a few orbs captured on film throughout the evening, but these were by far the most interesting.
4.30am Approx. Section A :
All group members sat together in section A watching the monitor of the camera still stationed in section B. There was no repeat appearance of the shadow on the door of the toilet. The only orb of interest was one that came out from under the table turned and went back.
4.45am Approx:
The movement sensor light above the toilet door comes on and the camera recording the area flickers slightly. Looking at the footage afterwards we questioned were we actually moving around behind the camera at this time, causing the interferance and being picked up by the sensor light.
After giving this some thought it has been confirmed, at that particular time, we were all sitting in section A and could not have caused the light to come on.
The interferance, we cannot entirely rule out the possibility of us being a cause, because the reciever for our camera was also in section A. Even though we had all been sitting quietly it still cannot be discounted.
5.15am: By this time the group were all tired and had decided to start packing things away.
After reviewing all footage tapes, noises were picked up in the cellar long after the group had set up, left and had locked the door behind them on their way out.
Also noise had been picked up by the bar in section B. The noise in this section had not been noted by the group during the investigation.
The cause of these noises are being looked into and the footage from each camera is being compared.
Conclusion:
The Negative Ion Detector picking up a reading in the cellar was very unusual, considering the group had checked all the equipment and surrounding area's and they hadn't given off a reading at all. When the reading occured they had been setting a trigger object and the group immediately checked out the feasibility, of movement and static from clothing as being a possible cause. They were unable to reproduce the reading or find a likely cause for it to have occured.
The group intend doing some further experimentation with the Detector but so far this reading remains unexplainable.
The light flicker in section A seen by two members of the group is not easily explained.
All 'mobile' equipment had been left behind in section B, so there were no camera's, torches, anything that could be considered a probable cause for the light.
It should also be noted the Lighthouse Pub is on a corner of a very quiet country lane and any vehicle passing is seen going around the entire building, so that as a possible cause for the light, can be ruled out completely.
At the time this light flicker was witnessed, later viewed camcorder footage also picks up a flash of light and shows two orbs in this area at the same time. These, also the fact the picture distorts make this an unusual occurance.
A photograph taken in section A of the bar area, shows a shadow/shape high up above the bar. This the group could find no explanation for, there is nothing there that could cast such a shadow and it was far too high to be a probable effect of mirror reflection.
The temperature was a constant 21*C throughout section B, with the exception of the toilet area where the plant is situated. This showed 2*C less throughout the evening. This is interesting when you consider this is where previous activity has occured. However we cannot completely ignore the fact, the door of the gents toilets is right by this plant. Initial baseline temperature readings had shown the toilet to be 16*C, so a draught or cooler air coming from under the door cannot be entirely ruled out.
Further investigation by the group to test the feasibility of this would be warranted.
The Shadow on the door of the toilet is very strange, it appears to be the size and shape of a person. The fact that after Austin saw the shadow behind the bar, the shape on the door had disappeared makes it stranger still.
Interestingly the 'legs' of the shadow do not completely reach the floor.
As Austin reports seeing a shadow behind the bar, two orbs come down from the bar area to the floor and seemingly dance around one another before moving up again and away to the toilet area. One of the orbs in particular is very interesting, it seems to have it's own inner energy/light and as it moves it spins.
It is interesting to note they come down from the bar and then go over to the area by the plant.
Which is where previous activity has occured and the temperature chart constantly recorded a cool spot around that particular area.
The orb that comes up from the floor in a perfect straight line along-a-side Austin is really interesting, it moves up at speed then slows considerably, almost stopping level with Austins face, before continuing upward in a straight line.
The sensor light coming on in section B, while the group were sitting together in section A is not easily explained.
The interferance on the footage the same time could have been down to any one member of the group having moved near the reciever in section A. Even though they weren't close to the reciever and were seated at the time, it cannot be ruled out completely.
The sensor light however picks up any movement within it's catchment area and would not have picked up any movement from section A.
The group would need to do further tests on the range of area picked up by the sensor.
Even though most activity had been expected around the bar area. The most interesting, with regards experiences and the events captured on camera, was at the top end of section B near the toilets and kitchen area.
In the event of a further investigation the group would concentrate more on this area and conduct some experiments with regards shadows and draughts.
The group also note that a more indepth investigation of the cellar would be warranted. To find explanations for the various movement/tapping noises recorded there.
WITH GRATEFUL THANKS TO FIONA, FOR ALLOWING THE GROUP ACCESS
TO HER VERY HOMELY/WELCOMING PUB AND FOR BEING THE PERFECT
HOSTESS.
